Dear Renee at Love Mechanics
It’s the New Year and so many of my friends are either breaking up or having the “Where is this relationship going?” conversation; especially with Valentines Day, right around the corner. Why not just relax and enjoy dating? Do you have any thoughts on why this happens?
New Years/Valentines Breakups
Dear New Years/Valentines Breakups,
Good question! Why does the changing of a date make people so anxious and worried about the status of their relationships?
The New Year/Valentines time frame represents new beginnings, like the holy days in the churches and Day of Atonement in synagogues-the day where you evaluate your year and let go of the things that are not aligned with your soul and vision for the new upcoming year. With New Years Resolutions come changes. You want to wipe the slate clean of habits, activities and people that are holding you back from your life goals. If having a relationship is one of your goals and you are not seeing yours headed in the same direction…let it go. It all depends on your attitude towards the New Years date and upcoming Valentines Day. Everyone has different opinions about what these days mean. Some people put a significant amount of pressure on the meaning behind these events and those who have “a shake down” are sensing lack of interest and want to get clear!
If you are casually dating and one of you is not into it as much as the other partner… you can feel it and a significant night like New Years often makes the reality surface. The energy is just not right and not flowing. Then, knowing that February 14th is right around the corner, you’d rather be home watching a rerun of “Sex in the City” than dragging yourself out just to say you had a date… but you didn’t and now you are stuck. I received 5 calls and numerous emails in January about this same situation and I think it’s best to let go if the relationship isn’t going anywhere. Sometimes it is a great way to weed out the dead wood! I hope that you had a fun evening whether you had a date or not. I have had many fun New Years & Valentines days just celebrating with friends and family. It’s about Celebrating Life and living in the Now! This is a time to re-evaluate your goals in love and I can help. Set your intentions and get yourself out there!
